YES Summary:
· A study conducted over 30 years
showed that for each arrest a person was subject to, they claim to have gotten
away with 8-11 other serious crimes.
· There are super predators that continuously
recidivate throughout their life
· Science has developed a way to
identify psychopaths.
· Police, prosecutors, and judges play
a huge role in identify the most serious offenders.
· Studies show that 3 strikes or other
get tough laws are effective deterrents
· Criminals are not born they’re made,
and it all begins with their upbringing.
NO Summary:
· 3 strikes laws and similar
legislation are basically set up to be efficient and easy to conduct.
· Most cases end with a plea bargin but
it has been shown that with three strike laws cases go to trial significantly
more often which of course cost money.
· Has led to the overcrowding of
prisons and the early release of many offenders
· The increase of discretion among
prosecutors and judges show a lack of control and makes it unpredictable.
Reflection:
When it comes to this issue I am stuck in the middle, but
that is where I think the answer to both sides lay. We should allow for polices
like 3 strikes but with that we need to account for circumstances that may not
warrant a life sentence. If a guy has 2 strikes in 1980 then is caught stealing
a candy bar in 2012 we obviously should not give him life in prison for that.
The answer to nearly every difficult question is found in the middle and
moderation is the key to everything.
